This is one of Canon’s first RF mount lenses, designed from the ground up to be paired with Canon’s new EOS R System. The first camera belonging to this system is the EOS R, Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera. This is classical focal length lens and is perfect for a multitude of situations from street to landscape and even macro.
RF Mount
Canon’s new RF mount has enabled their engineers to place the rear element of lenses closer to the camera’s sensor. This means they can produce lenses that don’t have to bend light as far and therefore can produce lenses with even better optical qualities, particularly towards the edge of the frame. The mount’s new 12 pin connection offers faster and more complex communication between the lens and the body.
Optical Quality
With 11 elements in 9 groups, a 9-blade circular aperture and an aperture of a very bright f/1.8 this lens produces excellent results with beautiful tones and bokeh.
The lens is lightweight and compact, weighing just 305g with a diameter of 74.4mm and a length of just 62.8mm.
Brilliant for close up shots, the RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM can focus to a minimum of just 17cm and can produce an image on the sensor that is half life size. Combine that with a fast aperture and 5 axis image stabilisation and this lens can produce some stunning macro images.
The filter thread is 52mm and the lens is compatible with Canon’s twin macro lights and macro ring lights.
Image Stabilisation
The new RF mount allows the camera and lens to share data, improving the image stabilisation performance. The RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM can provide up to 5 stops of 5 axis image stabilisation.
Customisable Control Ring
Each of Canon’s RF lenses comes equipped with a new customisable control ring. The ring can provide control over aperture, shutter speed, ISO or exposure compensation. It is customisable from the camera. The control ring is textured differently, so is easily identified by touch.
