This is one of Canon’s first RF mount lenses, designed from the ground up to be paired with Canon’s new EOS R System. The first camera belonging to this system is the EOS R, Canon’s first full frame mirrorless camera.
RF Mount
Canon’s new RF mount has enabled their engineers to place the rear element of lenses closer to the camera’s sensor. This means they can produce lenses that don’t have to bend light as far and therefore can produce lenses with even better optical qualities, particularly towards the edge of the frame. The mount’s new 12 pin connection offers faster and more complex communication between the lens and the body.
Optical Quality
The Canon RF 50mm F1.2 L USM is very bright and yet, is incredibly sharp wide open, from edge to edge. Canon say it’s the sharpest 50mm they’ve ever produced.
There are 15 elements in 9 separate groups. That includes 3 Aspherical elements (AS) to help control distortions and aberrations like astigmatism. It also includes one Ultra-low Dispersion element (UD) that helps control Chromatic Aberration (CA). The result is minimal distortion across the whole frame.
A 10-blade aperture produces beautiful bokeh, the minimum focusing distance is only 40cm.
The filter thread is a popular 77mm
Customisable Control Ring
Each of Canon’s RF lenses comes equipped with a new customisable control ring. The ring can provide control over aperture, shutter speed, ISO or exposure compensation. It is customisable from the camera. The control ring is textured differently, so is easily identified by touch.
Canon L Quality
As you’d expect from canon’s professional line of lenses, the quality of this 50mm F/1.2 lens is excellent. It is weighty and beautifully engineered, built for the demands of professional use. It is dust, water and vibration shock resistant. Both exposed elements have a fluorine coating to help repel dust, moisture and oil.
