Nikon’s D850 is a 45 Mega Pixel wonder. Replacing the popular D810 was never going to be an easy task for Nikon but the D850 is a worthy successor with many fantastic upgrades.

Image Quality

Image quality was never really going to be in doubt with this camera, Nikon have a great track record in this regard and they’ve maintained it with the D850. Sensor size has increased to an amazing 46MP yet the focusing speed and image processing speed have increased, thanks to a new focusing system, from the D5, and an Expeed 5 processor. Maximum native ISO has also increased to ISO25600.

Improved Everything…well almost.

There’s very little that hasn’t improved in the D850. You might expect that the increased sensor size has had negative impacts elsewhere but that doesn’t seem to be the case at all. In fact, the D850 shoots at a higher frame rate and can now shoot at up to 7 frames per second. The buffer size has also increased. In 12 bit RAW format the buffer has more than tripled to 170 shots and in 14 bit format it has nearly doubled to 51 shots.

There are three times as many focus points, and 99 of those are cross type. Low light focusing has also improved dramatically, the D850 can focus right down to -4EV which is really quite dark.

There are two card slots, an SD slot and an XQD slot, there isn’t a CF slot.

Wi-Fi has been added but this has come at the expense of a pop up flash.

Handy Extras

There are so many great features on this camera but a few that make me excited include the following:

Zebras and focus peaking in Live View (for stills and video).

Illuminated buttons – brilliant for night time shooting.

Electronic shutter intervalometer for extended time-lapse and long exposures.

Silent mode with completely silent shutter release.

Focus bracketing. This allows you to programme focus steps and the camera will take up to 300 sequential shots. Perfect for focus stacking them later on your computer.

Tilting touch screen.
