With over 30 Years experience In the photographic industry

There are so many features to explore in Nikon’s first general purpose full frame mirrorless camera. Here are some of the key ones.

In Body Stabilisation and Lens Flexibility

One of the big talking points about this camera is that it is Nikon’s first full frame body to offer in body image stabilisation, providing up to 5 stops of image stability, but what makes this even better is that Nikon are also releasing the FTZ adaptor with approximately 360 compatible Nikon lenses. Even non-stabilised lenses will benefit from the camera’s stability system. Furthermore, there are 90 odd AF-S/AF-P lenses that will be able to utilise the cameras autofocus system at full speed.

The new, larger lens mount will allow Nikon’s designers to produce even better lenses in the future, making use of the extra light gathering ability, especially when it comes to ultra-wide lenses and those with very wide apertures.

Image Quality and Autofocus

Where this camera differs from its sister, the Z7, is that it has a more general-purpose design. The high pixel density sensor is replaced with a more forgiving 24.5MP sensor with a native ISO that goes from ISO100 all the way to ISO51200.

The number of phase-detect autofocus points per pixel remains the same as the Z7 and because of the reduced pixel density the number of autofocus points reduces to 273. They still cover 90% of the frame, with just a thin margin between the extreme focus points and the edge of the frame.  Nikon have given it their newest processor, the expeed 6, which has allowed the Z6 to have burst speeds of up to 12 Frames Per Second with full auto exposure and auto focus functionality retained.

All this speed means that the camera needs to transfer lots of information very quickly and, to assist with this, the Z6 comes with a QXD card slot.

4K UHD video can be shot at up to 30 Frames Per Second (FPS), Full HD video at up to 60 FPS and, for great slow motion, HD video can be shot at up to 120 FPS. To further assist the videography experience, the Z6 utilises an electronic vibration reduction system to further reduce camera shake when shooting hand held.

Ease of Use

The Z6 comes equipped with a superb 3.2” tilting touch sensitive screen with 1.2 million pixels.

The Electronic View Finder (EVF) looks like another brilliant addition. It is very bright and detailed, having 3.6 million pixels. All these pixels don’t come at the expense of the refresh rate which is up to 60 frames per second so there is little or no discernible lag.

To make the shooting experience even easier the EVF displays a wealth of information and can display zebras (to help identify over exposed areas) and focus peaking (to help identify those areas of the image that are in focus).

NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S Lens
Included with the camera body is the standard zoom NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/4 S lens, which covers a wide-angle to portrait-length range and features a constant f/4 maximum aperture. The optical design incorporates one aspherical element as well as a unique aspherical extra-low dispersion element; both of which help to greatly reduce a variety of aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and accurate color rendering. A Nano Crystal Coating is also used to control flare and ghosting for increased contrast in strong lighting conditions. Suiting both photo and video applications, a stepping AF motor is also featured for smooth, near-silent autofocus performance.
