The Ultimate Guide To Drone Fishing

Every keen angler knows that the big fish, or big schools of fish, are out in deeper water. So, what are your options should you want to haul in a big Pink Snapper or Spanish Mackerel?

  • Buy a boat – nice to have but expensive to buy and run
  • Kayak fishing – requires a decent level of fitness to paddle out and in
  • Drone fishing – a fast-growing recreational sport anyone can do

Why is drone fishing so popular? Well, it caters to all ages and all skill levels.  Even though it is still a relatively new sport, manufactures have invested heavily to create top quality drones designed specifically for fishing.  To help you choose the perfect brand and understand how drone fishing works, we’ve put together The Ultimate Guide To Drone Fishing.

How does Drone Fishing work?

New technology means that today’s drones can fly further for longer. Some can even land on water and take off again. Using the drone’s inbuilt camera, you can see exactly what’s happening out on the water and pick the best place to drop your line.  You start by attaching your baited fishing line to a mechanism on the drone, then send the drone out as far as you want (200 -300 metres is common for drone fishing). Using your handheld controller, you simply click the drone fishing mechanism which releases your bait and line into the water.  Most new drones have an inbuilt return to home (RTH) feature meaning they can automatically return to a designated spot and land without you needing to control it. That’s good news as you’ll need your hands at the ready for that big bite on the line.

How does the Drone Fishing Mechanism work?

Depending on the drone you buy, the drone fishing mechanism may be included with the purchase of your drone. If not, you’ll have to buy it separately.  The mechanism, also known as a bait release mechanism or payload release mechanism, is attached to the bottom of your drone and allows you to secure your baited line and easily release it – all with the flick of a switch.  Once your bait and line is attached you should elevate the drone a few metres above your fishing rod height before flying out over the ocean. Ensure that you keep the drone flying at a consistent speed. If you start and stop along your flight path, you’ll create a pendulum effect with the baited line. Once you’ve located the perfect spot to drop your line, flick the release switch and direct your drone to return to home.

Which Drone is best for Fishing?

Today, there are drones specifically designed for water-based activities, like fishing. The SplashDrone 3+ manufactured by Swellpro is a multipurpose waterproof drone that comes with a quality release mechanism and HD waterproof camera.  These drones can land and take off on water. So, if you want to explore what’s happening under the sea, land the SplashDrone 3+ on the ocean surface and watch the underwater action on your monitor.  If you already own a quality drone, like a DJI Phantom or Mavic, you can add a bait release mechanism for a very reasonable price. There are mechanisms specifically designed for your DJI model, so be sure to ask for the right one.
